Dog Attack Statistics

Dog Attack Statistics

Unfortunately, dog attacks are a significant cause of injury in Michigan and throughout the United States. The Centers for Disease Control, an agency in the U.S. Public Health Service, conducted a national dog bite injury analysis in 2001 and reported the following facts:
  • About 368,000 people went to hospital emergency rooms for treatment of dog bite injuries during that year.
  • Of these dog attack victims, 6,000 individuals had to be admitted to the hospital.
  • The rate of dog attack injuries was highest for children between the ages of 5 and 9 years old.
  • One-half of the dog bite victims were under age 25.
  • Approximately 45% of dog attack victims were injured on the hand or arm, 26% on the leg or foot, and 23% on the head or neck.
  • About 8% of the victims aged 16 years or older were working when they were attacked by dogs. These work-related dog bites generally happened to people delivering mail or packages, working at animal clinics or shelters, or performing home repairs.

Although the Centers for Disease Control reported a disturbingly high rate of dog attacks, its analysis did not include millions of other Americans who suffer dog bite injuries every year, but do not go to hospital emergency rooms for medical care.
